This is so good. Northcote golf course has been un-enclosed: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/oct/17/fair-way-covid-turned-a-melbourne-golf-course-into-a-public-park-and-now-no-one-wants-to-leave
@hugh brilliant! Didn’t realise golf courses were subsidised, but it makes sense, it would take a lot for such huge spaces to be profitable on gold nowadays... wondering if it’s the same in Brisbane.
One more reason to turn most golf courses into parks with extra trees and biodiversity.
@stragu I'm curious about my local area's golf course now (Burnley). It's pretty terrible as a golf course but I'd be surprised if it's turning a profit.
@stragu @hugh public golf courses are subsidised, private (club) ones aren’t. Coincidentally, an awful lot of middle-ring Melbourne golf clubs have sold their original courses to developers for $$$$$ and moved out to the sticks (the Yarra Valley now has 4 private courses within a ~3km radius in one area!)
This is a Mastodon instance primarily for Australasian Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums and Records people, and anyone else who wants to hang out with them.
